  Nurs 503.08 Focus on Forensic:
An International, multidisciplinary perspective to forensic health care and practice issues.
(Introduction to health care in forensic populations)

Course Description


Course Description: 'Focus on Forensic: An International, multidisciplinary perspective to forensic health care and practice issues.' is a senior-level 3 credit multidisciplinary (Internet Delivery) course of interest to professionals in health care, criminal justice, and forensic science. This introductory course provides an overview of the history and practice of forensic medicine, forensic emergency (clinical/living), forensic psychiatry and forensic correctional practice. Health care roles and career opportunities in the various forensic emerging specialties will be highlighted. Topics such as the identification of victims and the psychiatric assessment and treatment of perpetrators will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to examine forensic health care issues pertinent to specific areas of practice and encounter the perspectives of forensic clinicians internationally.

Course Objectives

  • The major objectives of this course are to acquaint students and health care professionals with an overview of health care in the forensic practice arenas. The historical development of the forensic sciences and the prevailing social/ethical forensic issues where health care interfaces with the law will be addressed. Practice roles of forensic subspecialties will be outlined, together with the target forensic populations they serve.
  • After completing this course students should be able to:
  1. Explore the historical events, laws and acts that have influenced the evolution of forensic health care practices within the health and justice systems.
  2. Describe the roles and responsibilities of specific forensic subspecialties with regard to intervening with populations of victims and/or perpetrators.
  3. Relate common forensic concepts to specific forensic populations at risk.
  4. Examine prevailing social/ethical issues where health care and the law overlap.
  5. Access and utilize Internet based tools to explore and network with forensic experts and resources internationally.

  • There are 5 Forensic Topics in the course:
    Topic A Forensic Medicine
    Topic B Forensic Psychiatry
    Topic C Forensic Nursing
    Topic D Forensic Corrections
    Topic E Forensic Emergency
  • Students will choose 3 of the 5 Topics to work through for an undergraduate level 3 credit course. That is, they will be required to complete all the Unit Activities in each unit of Section #1-8 for only 3 of the 5 main Forensic Topics. All unit activities for their choice of 3 of the 5 Forensic Topics are to be completed by the student on the course Discussion Board.

Learning activities:

  • Learning activities will consist of discussion and interactivities on the Discussion Board surrounding the course content of each unit and/or forensic events in the media. Teaching/learning strategies employed will be historical timelines of events and laws, power point presentations, case studies, virtual tours of forensic practice areas, self assessment quizzes, and web resources.
  • The course will involve members of the forensic community - locally, nationally and internationally by incorporating their lecture presentations using the expert/author's picture and biography in a expert panel interactive method. Forensic multidisciplinary teams in many clinical practice settings will be highlighted. Featured will be photos of personnel from the forensic psychiatric assessment unit, the medical examiners office, the emergency rooms, police, paramedic and fire fighting services, and the correctional, remand and young offender centers.
  • Photos and bios of forensic national/international experts will be hyperlinked to articles and books cited that are required readings. Best practices, case studies, and current practice issues will be shared, explored and debated among students, authors and experts around the world.
  • A data base of multiple choice, true/false questions will be a self assessment exercise in each unit where the correct answers are immediately provided electronically.
